What is an Implant

A dental implant replaces not only the upper part of a tooth, the way a bridge or dentures would; a dental implant replaces the root as well, with a titanium rod that is set into the jaw by an oral surgeon, who leaves a portion of the rod extending above the gums. Dr. Smallwood then creates a custom crown and attaches it to the rod, using dental adhesive and a connecting piece called an “abutment.” In addition to individual-tooth implants, our Harrisonburg Dental Implant practice also offers:

  • Implant-Retained Dentures: Full sets of artificial teeth, set in a base that resembles the gums, are anchored to the jaw at various points using titanium rods.
  • All-on-4: An entire row of 10 to 14 teeth is anchored in place using four titanium rods.
  • Implant Restoration: Just as a natural tooth can be damaged, the artificial tooth atop an implant rod may be damaged, well. Dr. Smallwood’s skills include making implants look like new.
